In typography, a grave accent (`) is a diacritical mark used to indicate stress or vowel height, or to distinguish between homonyms. For example, in French, the word "père" (father) is pronounced differently than "pere" without the grave accent on the "e". The grave accent is most commonly used in languages such as French, Italian, Portuguese, and other Latin-based languages.
